Where Bears Dance opening

WHAT A NIGHT THIS WAS !!! It was so worth all the hard work and sleepless night.  We had a full house and everyone seemed to really enjoy their time, we even spotted some bears dancing the night away .

Thanks to everyone that contributed and believed in us . Thanks to the amazing SCAD Illustration faculty that were always available for feedback & support, and thanks to my loving family that made it out to Savannah . It’s all been an incredible journey, I loved every moment of it.

working on Where Bears Dance

It’s been a while since I posted here , a lot has happened the past couple of months that kept me really busy. However, I’m back again with a lot more energy and lots of new exciting projects on the way.

First off, I wanted to post about my MFA graduation show that was last November 2012 , in Savannah GA. My expireance at SCAD has been just amaizing and the show just put a great end to it all. The show was a collaberation with the phenomenal illustrator Malina Omut , I couldn’t have shared it with a better partner ! Even though this entire thing seemed like a nightmare at times it was still great fun.

Here are some of the process photos of building the frames, and working hard day & night to have everything ready on time :)

Eid 2012

As the month of Ramadan is coming to an end , let the Eid celebrations begin ! The crescent of the new month it out . This guy had to go through the trouble of stacking every furniture item he had in the house, but  his hard work paid off , and the glowing new moon is shining  bright in front of him. For this special occasion, I am going to introduce my first Saudi character . Eid ! The rest of the gang are happy to have him around, and they are all still staring at him, and wondering why he is wearing a dress !!!! oho Eid , don’t worry , it’ll take some time but I am sure they already like you ❤

Happy place…

Every night I would wake up to the sobbing and crying of a little girl , but when I got out of bed , the crying would stop. I thought I finally found a Savannah ghost , they really do exist !! However, I came to discover that it was only ‘ Krayola’  , crying every single night. She wasn’t happy playing on her swing anymore .

We had a long talk the next day , she said that she  really really wanted a ” shining , sparkly golden crown”  because she’s a princess. That she HATES the color blue, because it makes her cry  . I tried to reason with her at first, and  ignore her cries for a long time, but little girls can be awfully sassy at times, so i finally gave in, and gave her everything she wanted it- I just hope I won’t regret it !! she got her crown , a new colorful dress, and some funky pants. she even got some flowers hanging off her swing.

Now that Kroyla got what she waned , I wasn’t happy with  a few other elements of this piece , so while she was happy again  playing  on her swing , I went along with doing even more changes  ; the backgrounds, cloud, tress, and some touch ups here and there.

This is what I got :

I didn’t mean to do all these changes, they just happened ! Actually, the redo is a lot closer to the original concept I had intended.

Kryola is in her happy place now , and no matter what’s going on somehow , the light is shining right above her head,  making her smile .

Again , it’s been a while since my last blog post ! uhhhh- am I ever going to get better at this !!!! I really really try, but somehow , I’m not the best blogger – BUT ,  I WILL KEEP TRYING ;-).

I just finished an illustration  for HOW design magazine , ( a pretty cool magazine with a lot great illustrations)

The article ” Is your vision a hallucination ? ” , is   about how the success of a business is determined by having a strong vision that acts as a road map as well as a team that works and believes in that vision.  I had to do some warm up stretches to  my ” concept muscle ”  , it was a bit stiff at first , but with the right workouts it started growing again ;-).

Here are the three sketch ideas I submitted:

HOW liked all my ideas and said to just go forward with which ever i wanted .

Next i did color comps,

After, I figured out the colors and found my references it was building time … building , building , building…. non stop till this thing was DONE ! I only had a couple days , so i had to get to work.

I started off on the table , but somehow , I kept running out of space and started to expand my work area  ….

and expand …..

and then , there was no time to sort through all these papers , so on the floor they went ,

until, the only place I hadn’t taken over was the kitchen,,,… soooo…. I took care of that problem:

Luckley , I live with an awesome awesome roommate , friend, and illustrator ( check out her work : NatSuarez.com)  , who did not hate me for this mess but actually joined in the fun and  help  make the mess  :

The machine was done and the pilots ready for take off, now all I had to do was paint the background , snap a couple of test photos , take the actual photo –

Thanks to Natalie and Malina who helped me figure out the photo angles and lend me a couple of helping hands

Thank goodness, the studio is back to normal and Natalie still likes me…. till the next project  :D.

A different kind of love

A while ago I did the Stop Motion class, which was just great ! The class was mainly about puppet making, character development, the different ways of making an armature , and mold making. It was a lot of fun and very informative. We then had a weekend to explore stop motion a bit , and play around with making the those puppets. It was so over whelming , so exhausting , and yet so thrilling to see those little puppets walking around and taking over the stage.

My story was inspired by Roald Dahl’s “The Twits ” , the idea of this ugly dissfunctional couple who in some odd ways love each other .

Here is the sketch :

So even tho  Billy Bob and Betty Lou , are  a very grumpy  ugly couple ( especially Betty Lou ) ,  live in run down place, don’t have a lot of money , however, they find joy in playing pranks on each other.

It was especially fun making the characters and their home since it all had to be a big mess. I deliberately was trying to make their skin look dirty and infectious, their clothes torn and their house dirty with spider webs and piles of dirty dishes in the sink.

Now I can’t claim that this is any great work , when I do a new thing I like to just explore and push my limits and see where it will all go, which makes it really fun and exciting to me , and such a great learning experience. I would for sure try to give this all another try and explore mold making and stop motion further something.

Here is my little film :
